Home Care Instructions after Tooth Extraction

Controlling Bleeding
• A blood clot must form in the extraction site to stop bleeding and begin healing.
• Bite firmly on the gauze pad placed after your appointment for 30–45 minutes.
• If bleeding or oozing continues, replace the gauze with a fresh pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes.
• You may need to repeat this several times until the bleeding slows.
• For the first 72 hours, avoid anything that may disturb or dissolve the clot:
1. Do not rinse vigorously
2. Do not use a straw
3. Do not smoke
4. Do not drink alcohol
5. Do not brush the teeth immediately next to the extraction site
• Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours, as increased blood pressure can cause renewed bleeding.

Pain and Swelling
• Some discomfort and swelling are normal after an extraction.
• Apply an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas/corn) to the area to minimize swelling.
• Swelling typically peaks within 48 hours and then improves.
• Call the office if your prescribed medication does not provide adequate relief.

Medications
• Take pain medications as directed.
• If antibiotics were prescribed, take them for the entire prescribed course—even if symptoms improve—to fully resolve infection risk.

Diet
• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Stick to soft, nutritious foods on the day of surgery.
• Return to your normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable.

Oral Hygiene
• Begin your normal dental routine 24 hours after the extraction:
• Brush and floss as usual, avoiding the extraction site if tender.
• Keeping your mouth clean will speed healing and maintain freshness.

Most patients feel significantly better after a few days and can resume normal activities. Call our office immediately if you experience any of the following:
